I am taking course on theory of Programming lngauages. It also includes topics on Functional Programming. I need information about simple scheme/lisp intrerprters freely available for download and installation, enabling me to do some prcatice.

PLT Scheme is probably your best bet. It runs on every major OS, and includes a good editor/IDE.
