Re: Tragedy of the commons
There are a lot of kinds of libertarian, including some faux libertarians like "anarcho-syndicalists". I'm quite aware of this narrative about the history of the term "anarchiste". I believe that the narrative about that history was originated by a fellow named Murray Bookchin. ...

Re: Tragedy of the commons
I have a colleague at work who has described himself as a left-libertarian who also thinks it's okay for the government to ban transfats. It's a nutritionless poison... It's worth noting that transfats are a nutritionless poison that was pushed very hard by both the semi-public public health...

Re: Phosphorus
Yeah, classic. I do seem to recall a Lisp (not XSLT) with pointy syntax that someone put forward a few years ago. I figured it must be parody, but its creators were adamant: they meant it. Well- it wouldn't be the first time- see XSLT.

Re: Tragedy of the commons
The argument for free market usually goes like this: If something is desired, people can make more profit, and so make more, since more people/more is available, when there is too much, they cannot ask as much, and the production/availability of a service goes down. And that way, the supply always ...

Re: Require CMP in ECL
I'm trying to load the asdf which comes with ecl in the contrib folder. At the very end, it has a modification which has the code (require 'cmp). However, I can't seem to find the cmp.lsp file anywhere within the distribution. I tried commenting out this line and loading, but when attempting to tes...

Re: How Do You Teach Yourself Programming?
I'd suggest that in addition to reading books about CL you start looking at the simpler libraries. Thanks so much for your help. Is there a library in particular you would suggest? I don't mind researching them on my own, but if you could point me in a general direction, that would be great. Thanks...

Re: Clojure hate and Language Wars
Well, that blog seems to be down at the moment. And, while I've done a bit of playing around with Clojure I haven't done enough to have a strong opinion on it one way or another. I liked some of what I saw, but I was also a bit down on it mainly because of a factor Unne mentions: I'm just much more ...

Re: How Do You Teach Yourself Programming?
I've been thinking about this sort of thing a lot recently. Not so much the very basics of learning to program, but.. well, I've been trying to write a series of articles for people who have been programming for a while. maybe even professionally, but have no real background in computing. This turns...

Re: Yet another basic question
Luckily there's not a lot of implementation specific stuff in SICP, so you can probably use any Scheme you want. But I think it was written with MIT scheme in mind. MIT scheme is free (and actually it was one of the really early pieces of free software in the FSF sense- I think Sussman is still on t...

Re: Rant: lisp is not C. Get over it.
The analogy with mountain climbing captures pretty well how I feel at the moment about CL. In fact, I've taken to picnicking on the meadows again, first on bash scripts and now PHP... Hmm- well, look. PHP will give you VD, in the long run. I mean- if people give you money to do PHP that's all well ...
