You can have government grants without government?
Don't be rude.
That's a means.
Not an end.

If you didn't read my entire post, don't reply to it.

Re: Tragedy of the commons

What does that have to do with the price of tea? You suggesting that before they became states, there were no governments involved with them? The so-called "robber barons" arose out of government grants of land and money to railroad companies, etc. Serfdom, of course, is purely a fe...

Re: Tragedy of the commons

If you go too small in governmental/regulatory power you're back to robber barons, sharecropping, surfdom and boom/bubble and bust economics. You have that backwards...those things you list are/were caused by government; if you "go too small in governmental/regulatory power", you solve th...

Re: Tragedy of the commons

First, if people aren't charitable enough, then perhaps we really, as a society just aren't that charitable and perhaps the number of welfare recipients would decrease once they realize that. In other words, either we are charitable or we aren't. If we aren't, why are some of us trying to coerce (f...

Re: Tragedy of the commons

So, for instance, I get the feeling that if I invest in a tobacco company, you would think that I was doing something wrong and putting investment profit ahead of good health and social welfare. As a libertarian, that doesn't trouble me, particularly since tobacco is a legal substance with a long h...

Re: Tragedy of the commons

So what? Is there something wrong with being concerned about ROI? I don't know about you, but my primary investment goal is good returns. Investments are not charities. My point is that as long as they have good ROI, they don't care how they get it. They don't even care if it's not good in the long...

Re: Tragedy of the commons

Privately owned companies serve the owner, employees, and customers. What comes first to them is their choice. Publically traded companies serve the shareholders, always. Private companies serve whoever the owner wants them to serve. There is nothing that prevents a private company from screwing it...

Re: Tragedy of the commons

[quote="findinglisp" I think you're stretching things. It's a nutritionless poison in the same sense as tobacco, potato chips, gin, and any number of other things that we allow people to consume. That's far different from something like cyanide which I what I think of when I see "poi...

Re: Tragedy of the commons

I don't buy the "corporations are evil" thing spouted by many people (not necessarily you). Corporations can be bad in the same way that individuals can be bad. Corporations by themselves are simply organizational and legal structures for how groups of people can work together; they are i...

Re: Clojure hate and Language Wars

Huh? Why? Completely cut off, no chance. It was 2 years ago, its possible I just noticed I'd lost at 6 moves, and played longer, or it may have been 12 moves... Sorry, I just find it hard to imagine a resignworthy position after 12 moves, unless you were playing on a small board (9x9). Yeah, 2 year...
